Weird Weddings

Update: My freebies for 2015 are full, but if you feel my style of wedding photography is right for you, please contact me! I can work with almost any budget if we are a fit.

I began photographing weddings in 2008. Over the years, I've realized how lucky I am - naturally, the kindest, most authentic couples have come my way. I think this is in part because I like real, happy moments, and only real, happy people make those.

I moved to Atlanta from a small town in Southwest Georgia on New Year's Eve in 2013. (BTW, piling the family up on a mattress on the living room floor for sparkling cider and a Twilight Zone marathon is a pretty great way to ring in the New Year!) Within a few weeks of living in Atlanta, I started associate shooting for two other wedding photography companies and second shooting for lots of local photographers. My freelance work has given me a chance to step back and reassess how I want to move forward with From the Hip.

Sometimes, being a wedding photographer makes me feel like such a faker. And I don't fake being fake that well. I don't remember/care which side the garter goes on. I like loud and tacky things, so I generally lack the knowledge to appreciate when something is a fancy name brand. I despise trends. I am ALL ABOUT lots and lots of color. These things don't always go hand-in-hand with the typical wedding, especially Southern ones!

I love that there are couples who are very independent and would rather totally wing it when it comes to planning their wedding. Many of these couples don't have a big wedding budget. A lot of their plans are of the DIY nature, which means a LOT of thought, love, and hard work went into their wedding.

I'm not sure why, maybe because photography is as much a craft as a creative endeavor, but photography is one of the places where it's really hard to effectively DIY it. Your brother's roommate who takes pretty good pictures just isn't the same as a professional, experienced wedding photographer. You deserve photos that do justice to the fun, meaningful, unique, "so you" PARTAY that your wedding will inevitably be. One day, when you're pretty much the coolest old person on the planet, your grandchildren will want to know if you've always been this cool or if it was something you grew into, and you should have pictures that prove just how awesome you've always been.

The wedding industry is BIG. As a person who has always rooted for the underdog, I want to be a part of amplifying the voices of those who have something different to say. So, as of now, From the Hip will not be booking weddings in 2015. Except free ones. You read that right. FREE WEDDING PHOTOGRAPHY. Obviously, these spots will be very limited as #1 I will still be freelancing full time, and #2 I'm not independently wealthy. Photograhy is how I make my living and support my family, so this is MAJOR. It's something I believe in and feel passionate about. If you are outside the Atlanta area, I'd love to discuss travel options with you. The process for applying to retain From the Hip for your wedding will start with a super simple, brief questionnaire to see if we're a good fit.
